Now if only they had gifs… oh wait you just make your own

Just tried out the new Snapchat and it is awesome. From the teens app used for sexting to a verb now used by, well mostly teens. The latest update from Snapchat is definitely a huge leap for messaging apps.

Why it’s cool:

  • Cross medium
  • Asynchronous (messages and videos)
  • Most loved features from other messaging platforms
  • Face filters
  • Amazing onboarding video

Cross medium

This is really one of the coolest features. The ability to type and video chat at the same time is pretty darn amazing

Asynchronous

This is perfect for friends across time zones. Apart from having one long stream of videos, Snapchat now allows for tiny video bubbles to be embedded in the conversation stream.

Stickers

I think stickers is a very Asian phenomenon. (And still early days for Snapchat, most of the cooler stickers and their IPs are still with LINE or Facebook messenger). But awesome edition to the tools used for communicating. (stickers replace at least 20 words)

Face filters

Yes the fun from Snapchat is still there

Onboarding

It’s pointless having cool new features without people knowing (back to face filters example… I think someone had to show it to me the first time)The onboarding video is amazingly done. Short, fun, colorful… everything that reminds you about being young, cheerful and having a bright future ahead :D

If you are still contemplating whether it’s worth the space, effort and time to join Snapchat, I would strongly urge you to try it out. If it’s not for you, well, your friends will join and you will be dragged into it. I am quite confident Snapchat will carve out a huge portion out Facebook. For now, it is definitely the best 1 to 1 communication tool. (The 1 to many in terms of stories is still a bit meh… and the approval of filters is rather tedious)

But yes, try it and be young again!
